Last year, after days and days of painstakingly creating a spreadsheet of analytics events for a mobile app, I finally had all of the events and properties defined and ready for implementation. Fast forward to this year and I needed to create a similar tracking plan. With the proliferation of AI-assistant tools, I felt there had to be a faster way to create a tracking plan. After a lot of experimentation, I found a template and prompt that works and I’m excited to share it!
Preparation
Before you get started, here’s what you’ll need:
- Check out Bottle Rocket’s article, “Your Guide to a Product Analytics MVP” for an overview of the process.
- If you’re new to tracking plans, familiarize yourself with the concepts and templates from Amplitude and Mixpanel.
- The prompts are optimized using Google’s Gemini Pro 1.5, however Flash works well too. Results will vary with other tools.
- Download Bottle Rocket’s ‘Measurement Plan for AI’ document. You’ll need that for your prompts.
Step-by-Step for a New Product
If your digital product doesn‘t exist yet, don’t worry. Use your completed designs to generate a tracking plan.
- Export your final designs as a PDF. If it’s complex with many screens, only select key screens with the primary actions you want to track. You may also need to break it down into sections if the PDFs are too large.
- Open Gemini on a desktop computer
- Drag the PDF and the ‘Measurement Plan for AI’ into the input field.
- Also, paste this prompt
- First, analyze the content and key functions of the [heading of the designs on the PDF]. Then, create relevant analytics events for [analytics platform ex. Amplitude, Mixpanel, etc] using the [tab name that correlates to your product] tab on the attached spreadsheet as a template. Each event can have multiple event properties and user properties. Break the table down by events, plus multiple relevant event and user properties. Format the table in the same way as the [tab name that correlates to your product] tab.
- Replace the [variables] with your specific data.
- Let it run!
- Paste the results into your own spreadsheet and edit as necessary.
Step-by-Step for an Existing Website or Mobile App
If digital product is publicly available, Gemini can evaluate it without any designs. Simply include the URL or the app name.
- Open Gemini on a desktop computer
- Drag the ‘Measurement Plan for AI’ into the input field.
- Also, paste this prompt“
- First, analyze the content and key functions of [Ex. url, “airbnb ios app, mcdonald’s android app].
