Online shopping has become a staple in the lives of many Americans, thanks to the convenience and perks like free shipping offered by larger retailers like Amazon Prime. With fast, sometimes same-day shipping, free returns, and exchanges, this has become the expectation for many consumers. However, many individual merchants struggle to provide these benefits on their own.   

ShopRunner, founded in 2009, is an e-commerce platform offering fast, free shipping and returns from popular retailers like Bloomingdale’s and Under Armour. It provides free membership through partnerships with Amex, Chase, Mastercard, and Paypal. Acquired by FedEx in 2020, ShopRunner aims to simplify the online shopping experience by offering a streamlined process for discovering, ordering, tracking, and returning products.

what we set out to do

Create a consumer-friendly platform that brought together the convenience of online shopping and the reliability of a trusted delivery network.

Online shopping has revolutionized the way many people shop, with many retailers like Amazon Prime offering fast, sometimes same-day shipping, in addition to quick returns and exchanges, this has now become the expectation for many consumers. However, independent merchants without the backing of a large corporation often struggle to keep up with the likes of Amazon. That’s where ShopRunner was born.

ShopRunner saw that there was no solution that seamlessly connected the entire customer journey for online shoppers – from searching and browsing to purchasing and post-purchase services like order tracking and returns. ShopRunner fills this gap, offering a comprehensive platform that integrates it all in one place. They leverage the logistical network and footprint of their parent company, FedEx, while providing transparent delivery times and free returns.  

While ShopRunner easily attracted new members, they needed help engaging and retaining them. That’s why they’ve expanded their focus to include post-purchase services.

With their commitment to simplicity and empowering both consumers and merchants, ShopRunner is reshaping the e-commerce industry, offering a seamless and loyalty-driven shopping experience for all. 

While FedEx boasted an impressive logistical footprint, it had yet to offer a consumer-facing app. FedEx approached Bottle Rocket to create a consumer-friendly platform that brought together the convenience of online shopping and the reliability of a trusted delivery network.

The Bottle Rocket team got right to work to bring the solution to market by designing and building a minimum viable product (MVP). This approach allowed Fedex and ShopRunner to quickly establish a presence and begin addressing the needs of the target audience. Over the course of 20 weeks, the Bottle Rocket team executed design, user research, and prototyping. This effort resulted in the development of 20 core screens that formed the foundation of the new mobile app. 

To ensure efficiency and accessibility, Bottle Rocket leveraged the power of Flutter, a cross-platform framework. By utilizing Flutter, the team maintained a single code base that seamlessly catered to both Android and iOS users. This not only expedited the time-to-market but also provided a consistent experience for customers, regardless of their preferred device.

The insights gained from current ShopRunner members shaped the feature set and goals. The team wanted to create an app that served as a companion tool, enhancing customers’ shopping experiences. By bringing the post-purchase and return processes directly to the user within the app, the team was able to keep users engaged with ShopRunner, even when they are not actively making new purchases. Through the partnership with FedEx, users could now effortlessly track their orders and utilize QR codes for hassle-free returns at designated locations. Additionally, understanding the importance of transparency, the new app allows users to track packages shipped through competitive logistics firms, ensuring a comprehensive and reliable service.

With these advancements, the team not only streamlined the shopping journey but also expanded the scope of the app to cater to the broader needs of users.

The app has achieved remarkable success, with 41,000 downloads from both the App Store and Google Play Store. With a solid 3.8-star rating, the app clearly showcases its effectiveness and user satisfaction. The app boasts an active user base of 8,500 individuals who consistently engage with its features monthly.
